brace yourselves! (and your B posts)

When the inner sill is removed from the car there is, theoretically, nothing left to support the B post (ie the pillar which the rear door hinges bolt to and the front door closes against) which is left dangling from the roof panel. Accepted wisdom is that it could move and it would therefore be difficult to get the doors to fit properly once everything was welded back in place. Some people seem to think the whole space-where-the-doors-would-be could also change shape. Although how this can happen - when the roof, floor and transmission tunnel are still is place - is beyond me. For the above reasons I 'braced' the apertures by welding stout metal tubes between the A & B posts and the rear seat pan and front seat crossmember.

I welded another small brace in which was welded to the front seat mounting bracket as this was attached to the inner sill and its position would be lost when the sill was removed.

this picture shows the main brace and the repaired outer floorpan-lip. If the floorpan-lip isn't sound there will be nothing to weld the bottom of the inner sill to! the brace between the A & B posts is (if you look closely) welded to the remains of the outer sill which have several spot welds attaching themselves to the A & B posts. the bar will come out later by drilling out the spotwelds
view from above shows braces between A & B posts, front & rear seat crossmembers and small angle iron piece keeping small brackets in original position
